There was recently a very serious motor vehicle accident involving a motorcycle, car, flatbed truck and semi in Arizona.
A cyclist was killed in the fiery crash which caused the highway to be shut down for numerous hours.
Apparently gas cylinders tumbled off a flatbed traveling on the highway. A car braked to avoid hitting the cylinders. The motorcycle immediately stopped behind the motor vehicle causing a tractor trailer to collide into the bike causing the bike to careen into the automobile. The cyclist was transported to the hospital with serious injuries and later died. Luckily the semi truck driver escaped the crash without injury.
The Phoenix fire department announced: “Several fires exploded. We don’t know if it’s the gasoline tanks from the motorcycle or diesel tanks from the truck or what the compressed cylinders were carrying…There was a traumatic trauma situation to the motorcyclist. Several cars were damaged severely and also several explosions of fire.” The flatbed operator did not stop at the scene of the wreck. Police do not know if he was aware of the cylinders falling off the truck or the resulting crash. Nonetheless, this is being investigated as homicide by the police.
It seems that the police will investigate this as a potential hit and run and perhaps a manslaughter case?
If this deadly accident occurred in Rhode Island the Flatbed truck operator would clearly be liable for negligence but the 18 wheeler truck driver might face some comparative fault for not stopping in a timely manner to avoid hitting the cyclist.
